CASE STUDY: Massachusetts State Police Using Drones to Investigate Auto Accidents

Mass. State Police using drones to investigate auto accidents

SUMMARY: Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are a valuable tool for help investigators document the scene of serious traffic accidents. The technology offered by drones helps police conclude the investigation more rapidly and with greater detail than traditional tools, ultimately resulting in better, more cost-effective data.

PROBLEM: Serious traffic accidents need to be well documented which can result in extended road closures that impede transportation and commerce. Investigators often need overhead aerial shots to help determine the sequence of events at a crash scene.

SOLUTION: With the help of funds from the Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts State Police have purchased a DJI Inspire Pro UAS with necessary and other equipment to provide the much-needed aerial prospective when document a major traffic accident.

“This is the first step of a UAV program,” said David Procopio, a state police spokesman. “It’ll be flying at a relatively low altitude over a small area,” Procopio said. “We’re doing this to help motorists.”
